A good quality photo for pet portrait paintings should have the following characteristics:
High resolution: The photo should be high-resolution, ideally 300 dpi (dots per inch) or higher. This ensures that the image is sharp and detailed, allowing the artist to see and capture the finer details of the pet's features.
Good lighting: The photo should be taken in natural or bright, well-balanced lighting to avoid harsh shadows or overexposure. Natural light, such as from a window or outdoors, is often best, as it evenly illuminates the pet and shows its true colors.
Clear focus: The pet should be in clear focus, with sharp details visible in the eyes, fur, and any unique markings. Blurry or out-of-focus images make it challenging for the artist to capture the pet's likeness accurately.
Close-up view: A close-up photo of the pet's face and upper body is ideal. This allows the artist to see the pet's expression, eye color, and specific facial features, which are essential for creating a lifelike portrait.
Natural pose: The pet should be in a natural, relaxed pose that shows off its personality. Avoid photos where the pet looks startled, is moving too much, or is in an awkward position, as these can be hard to recreate artistically.
High contrast and detail: The photo should have good contrast and detail, especially in the fur, eyes, and any unique features like spots or patterns. This helps the artist capture the depth and texture of the pet's coat.
By providing a photo that meets these criteria, you help ensure the artist can create a high-quality, accurate, and beautiful portrait of your pet.

The rebuilding fee is an additional charge that may be applied to your pet portrait commission if the reference photos provided are of poor quality. High-quality photos are crucial for capturing the unique features and personality of your pet accurately. If the photos are blurry, low-resolution, poorly lit, or do not clearly show the pet's distinctive characteristics, it makes the painting process more challenging for the artist (hi, that’s me!).
In such cases, extra time and effort are required to reconstruct or interpret these details accurately, which might involve piecing together different elements from multiple photos or making educated guesses about the pet's appearance. The rebuilding fee compensates for this additional work and ensures that you receive a high-quality portrait that truly reflects your pet.
The fee is determined based on several factors, including the size of the commission, the type of pet, and the quality of the photos received. I will also work with you in an attempt to find better photos of your pet or, if your pet is still with us, send you tips and guidance on capturing better photos of your pet. If a rebuilding fee is necessary, I will discuss it with you before sending over an invoice to ensure transparency and understanding. This way, you are fully aware of any additional costs involved before proceeding with the commission.
